Long before it was a creative office building, 600 Spring Garden was a castle of finance, an early design by Frank Furness and his partner George Wattson Hewitt. Completed in 1872 as a bank, it was once called "one of the most commodious and attractive trust company homes" in the city. Inside, their architectural boldness is still strikingly present: secret passageways, narrow iron staircases, brass-sheen columns, immense windows, and three giant vaults built to hold a fortune.
By the late 1980s, the vaults had gone quiet and the dance floors took over. Over the following decades, the building reinvented itself as a string of Philadelphia nightlife institutions, each one drawing crowds into a space built for trust officers and turning it into something else entirely.
Today, that same soaring architecture, the arched windows, the coffered ceilings, the original vaults still intact, sets the stage for its next chapter as a creative office building, carrying more than 150 years of reinvention with it.
